The Virginia Beach Health Department says, in 2010, there were 60 reported cases in hotels compared to 20 in 2009. At A-Active Termite and Pest Control, employees say they field 20-30 calls a week from hotels, homeowners, people in apartments and office buildings and universities. "With all the travel, it's moving its way into Hampton Roads more and more," said Jeff Johnson, the company's vice president. He says the critters can live up to three weeks after feeding on human blood. They can live in your mattress, carpets, couches and suitcases. That's why their nickname is "hitch-hiker". Experts say 60% of people won't have any bite marks,so it can be hard to know if you have them on your bed. Treatment is difficult. There's no one chemical that works on all bedbugs. Johnson has had successin heat treatments and using a combination of chemicals. A-Active is planning a free seminar on bedbugs in late March at the Virginia Beach Central Library. The Virginia Beach Health Department will hold a training for hotel owners sometime in spring.
